Incredibly Awesome Math Trick Thing!

Brants_glasses_issue_001Check this out.  You'll need to use the calculator thing on your computer:

1. Key in the first three digits of your phone number (NOT the Area code...)
2. Multiply by 80
3. Add 1
4. Multiply by 250
5. Add   to this   the last 4 digits of your phone number
6. Add   to this  the last 4 digits of your phone number again.
7. Subtract 250
8. Divide number by 2

Pretty awesome, huh?

Yep, yep it is.  Pretty.  Dadgum.  Awesome.

For those who care (i.e., no one except me), this is how it works, keyed by steps above.

'x' represents the first 3 digits, 'y' represents the last 4.

1. x
2. 80x
3. 80x + 1
4. 250(80x + 1) = 20000x + 250
5. 20000x + 250 + y
6. 20000x + 250 + 2y
7. 20000x + 250 + 2y - 250 = 20000x + 2y
8. (20000x + 2y) / 2 = 10000x + y = your phone number

Yeah, I know. I destroyed all the magic. You can thank me later.

I think you are Awsome, just like your song...Can you put the song on the link? My freind was telling me about it and I missed it on the radio!
Thanks,
Susan

i still think it is pretty cool.........but whoever discovered that has noooooo life!

Brant that is so cool my mom was amazed{I am only nine and a half}and Jonathan I dont get it!!!!!!!!!!

Regina,

I was just showing mathematically how this sequence of arithmetic operations gives you your phone number (as if by magic). The notation I used is something you may not be familiar with, since you probably haven't gotten to algebra in your schooling yet.

David B,

It's pretty easy to create this sort of sequence of arithmetic operations. It probably took only 10 minutes.

Jonathan,
I care. You are not alone. I'm a math teacher and I was going to make the same post as soon as I read this. I just hadn't read the blog for a few days and you beat me to it.

This is Brant's Blog of AWESOMENESS! not Brant's Blog of logical reasoning, right? Just making sure. Accually, I just graduated and I am still a little bitter toward math still.

As you can see from my previous post, I graduated in electrical engineering not english. "accually" is actually spelt "actually" my bad
