This segment of American Idol was moving beyond words. And, my heart is so full to know that the love of Jesus Christ is being recognized is such a public way. And, thanks to WAY-FM for helping bring so many to a Christ-centered life. There is hope for our world!

Hey Brant,I missed the show last night,I'm greatfull that you played "Shout to the Lord",this morning, unfortunantly I didn't get goose bumps as I was moved to tears during rush hour traffic, could have been dangerous,as for leaving out Jesus,I am not offended,"Jesus",was mentioned,guesstimating,30 plus times on Dolly Parton week, several songs mentioned His name and her song Jesus and Gravity used it many times...as for meaning any thing to "Idol Singers" many seem to have Cristian values, but to me the most important thing is that worship moves God and worship moves people(including are the tools we use to lead worship in many churches, our voices, instruments, lighting, sound sytems,etc...),especially worship music, because music moves all people...any way thanx Brant, love your show, which is another great "tool" God is chosing to use,Scott.

It awesome but yet they still choose not to say the name of Jesus! Instead of singing the name of Jesus they change Jesus to Shepherd.. I rather hear the name Jesus.. only by his name can you be saved..

My Mom who is far from the Lord called me last night crying after seeing Shout to the Lord on American Idol. She would sing that song with her choir at Minnesota Teen Challenge. We marvelled together how God's truth will prevail in this dark world in which we live. I know it gave her hope. God's love and power is truly alive and at work! What an awesome reminder--Praise God!

I don't normally watch the show, but how incredible is this? As far as leaving His name out, His name was there in many forms, but most importantly in the work, only He, can accomplish. God plants seeds better than we can ever dream to plant. Those that already know His name is Jesus should be excited to see how many will now want to get to know Him. God will always take the bad (as this show has sometimes shown) and change it around for His glory. AMEN!!!

Hey Brant it's good to hear you every mornin on my way to school. well even though I'm not an "Amerincan Idol freak" what happened last night had such an impact on the life of the unbelievers, I bet that people who think that Jesus is nothing more than another religion felt that fire in their hearts. It also gave me hope that one day our nation will fully turn back to Jesus. Let him be our IDOL, our SUPER STAR, and most important our KING SAVIOUR.

Thanks tons for the kind comments...
For my part, I thought this was a transcendent moment. To be honest, I've been rooting for Carly to get booted off the show for some time. Can't stand watching her sing, etc.
Then it occured to me, watching this, how much God loves her. I know that's cliche, but it's a good one. Same thing for all these people, and for the whole foolish entertainment industry.
Did they totally mean what they were singing? Do *I*?
It also dawns on me that this is likely the highlight of their careers. It won't get better than that: Even with the industry silliness, they just finished being a part of a huge act of mercy, and they were doing it together, and they sang a soaring song about the Reason for mercy, in front of, likely, the biggest audience they'll ever sing for. That's as good as it gets. And spotlights and all, they had to be feeling it.
People are drawn to this, this mercy, humility, and adoration. The producers didn't do this for church folk, they did it because they knew it would give *everyone* chills.

God is Good...That was absolutely amazing. It definately made me cry in joy to hear God being praised in front of millions of viewers. Though it may have brought much controversy, however His name is being mentioned and it only gives us Christians the opportunity to share Christ within those conversations. Praise God!!!

Okay, seeing as Brant has gone all soft on us, it's time for me to pick up the reins of resident cynic.
Seeing this makes me wonder if this is what is meant by "the very stones crying out".
[From Brant: Shoot, I don't think that's cynical. I also think "worship" shouldn't be defined strictly as singing.
I see what A.I. is doing, caring for the "least of these", and think: If the church doesn't do it, someone will.
Not that we don't ever do it, but we spend 85% -- that's tens of billions, yearly -- on our own "congregational maintenance", I read somewhere.]

this is a song that every-one should have in their hearts it will bring you to your knees every time
Posted by: george lappas | April 10, 2008 at 11:00 AM
JEHOVAH RAAH- THE LORD, MY SHEPHERD. God was truly glorified, that every knee shall bow, every tongue confess, amen and amen.

At first I was a bit perturbed that half of the verses (the half that mention Jesus' name) were cut. But then it dawned on me that it was a miracle that the song was even being sung in the first place. I realized that even though the name of Jesus wasn't being sung, no one else is so fervently called Lord and King and Savior, and no one else is the focus of more songs than Jesus. So even though it was ommitted (as a lot of the performers' verses were indeed shortened), I think it was still obvious who the song was about.
It was good to see them sing with such passion.

Hi!!! I love your blog! I heard the American Idol song on the radio this morning, and I didn't get to call in. I am fourteen, and I love listening to this radio station. I didn't get to watch American Idol, but when I heard that in the car, I was so happy. Finally, people are getting the message of God out there on national television. I was so surprised when I heard it was that song, sung by the people of American Idol! I just wanted to thank you for that, because that totally made my day.

I am so inspired by the American Idol's choice for a closing song. As for the "lack" of reference using Jesus' name; there was no question at all about who they were referring to. Shout to The Lord...who else would they be singing about. Thanks for sharing it this morning, I was raised with some beliefs of how evil music is, but with the help of so many musicians, look how American Idol is doing the Lord, Jesus' work. Play On.

What a testimony to the Word of God: Therefore also God highly exalted Him, the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those who are in heaven, and on earth, and under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Phil 2:9-11).
Thanks for all you do Brant! You make my drive in morning bearable. God Bless!

Thank you for give me that marvellous news this morning, I didn't see American Idol but thank to you I didn't miss the most important song of this show, even if they didn't mention JESUS at the begining of the song, they and everybody knew they were singing to JESUS OUR SHEPHERD, OUR LORD, OUR SAVIOR.....AMEN...

Thank you WayFM, you inspire me everyday, every song and every testimony. Thank you for this blog on American Idol. The fact that they didnt use the name Jesus just proves the power of His name alone. The producers, head executives and whoever else changed the song knows it too!!
God Bless America!!!

Wow, Praise the Lord! I cannot believe they sang that song, and mentioned Jesus on National TV! I got the chills and tears in my eyes when I watched the beginning of American Idol 4/10. I did not watch it 4/9, so what an amazing shock! The other week with Dolly, and the band who sang this little light of mine were so bold and sang about Jesus, Dolly mentioning she had Jesus to Ryan, Brooke in tears when she heard Dolly sing. WOW, this is so awsome!

As a Christian I do not see anything wrong with them changing the words of the song. I think that My Jesus is My Shepard. He is the King of Kings, Lord of Lords, the Son of God, the Son of Man, the Prince of Peace, the Great I am, my Rock, my Salvation, my Hope, and the list goes on. He is King, and I see nothing wrong with them changing the words.
